Good nutrition, exercise and regular check-ups are keys to staying healthy. Read through the Living Well newsletters on this page for tips that may help you on your wellness journey. A new newsletter will be posted each month and every newsletter features an important health topic, fitness tips and a quick and healthy recipe.

Exercise Safely

Exercising is good for your health, but be sure to be safe while exercising. Start slow if you are not used to exercising and always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. 

Do warm ups prior to your exercise routine to help you prevent straining yourself and keep your body hydrated. You should also be sure you have the correct equipment before you start and use protective gear when needed, such as wearing a helmet while riding your bike.

Aim for a Healthy Weight

Creating a healthy eating plan may help you reach your weight loss goals, while ensuring you body gets the nutrients it needs. Along with helping you manage your weight, healthy eating plans also help lower your risk of developing chronic health conditions.

When trying to lose weight, reducing your calorie intake by 500 to 750 calories a day may help you lose 1 to 1.5 lbs per week. Always check with your doctor before starting a new diet plan.

Coping With Traumatic Events

Traumatic events can effect people in a variety of ways, emotionally and physically. 

Feelings associated with traumatic events could include excessive worrying or fearfulness, anger, trouble thinking clearly, and sleeping problems. If you are having these types of feelings after a traumatic event, be sure to reach out for help.

Getting Enough Sleep
Sleep is a very important part of your overall health. Both your mind and body need adequate sleep to function properly.  

Although sleep requirements change based on age, most adults require 7 to 8 hours of good quality sleep per night. Lack of sleep can lead to physical and mental health risks, so be sure to make sleep a priority for your health.

Manage Stress
Stress isn’t always bad, but over time unmanaged stress can lead to physical health problems. Although you cannot always avoid stressful situations, you can prepare in advance for stressful situations. 

Be sure to ask for support when you need it. Friends and family can be great support systems and don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you need it.

Anxiety Disorders
Feelings of anxiousness may arise in everyday situations like facing a personal problem, getting ready for a test, or making a big decision. This is generally a temporary feeling. If anxiety does not go away or continues to get worse, you may be experiencing an anxiety disorder.

Be sure to consult with your doctor if you are experiencing prolonged feelings of anxiety or if symptoms interfere with your daily life.
